Karen Corrêa, Communications & Marketing Associate

Describe what you do in your current position: I design posters and event materials, manage email and social media, update the website, edit videos, and anything else that’s needed for TBMS to look and sound good!

How long have you worked for Turtle Bay? How long in your current position? I joined TBMS in October, 2017.

Describe other work experience or education: I have managed digital production for many non-profits over the years. This includes creative direction and production for videos, websites, and audio pieces, as well as handling the many other digital and design needs that pop up. I have a BA in Music from Wesleyan University.

What is your favorite thing about Turtle Bay Music School? I love that Turtle Bay is focused on being a transformative force in the community. The free concerts, community events, and school programs bring people in the community together and have such a positive impact.

What is your favorite Turtle Bay memory and/or event? I thought this year’s Messiah Sing-Along was pretty fantastic!

Do you play any instruments? Describe any musical background you may want to share! I played piano as a child and studied viola through college, but I would now mainly consider myself a bass guitarist, songwriter, and singer. I have toured the US and Europe with my own band, and I have also toured as bassist and backing vocalist for artists like Moneybrother (Swedish Grammy-nominated artist) and Dams of the West (Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend). I also still occasionally play viola with the NYC composer/performer collective Anti-Social Music.

What is your favorite song and/or piece of music? If we’re talking pop, “Tenderness” by General Public is one of my all-time favorites. If we’re talking classical/experimental I love Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres” and almost anything by Philip Glass.

Who is your favorite composer/songwriter? There are so many that I love – don’t make me choose!

Where are you from? I grew up in Denver, Colorado.

Favorite color: Right now it’s orangey pink…the color of sunsets or Turkish Delight.

Favorite food: Avocado.

Pets? Kids? Family members? I have one son, named Søren.

Any other fun facts you’d like to include! I once flew an airplane over Hayward, CA.
