TBMS

Mission and Vision

Since our founding in 1925, Turtle Bay Music School has fostered love and knowledge of music by providing high quality musical instruction and a range of related music programs and activities to motivated students of all ages, backgrounds and levels of ability. The unifying principle that guides all of TBMS' programs is the fundamental belief that creativity is a vital means of bringing together a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Over the years, TBMS has grown from a small organization with a handful of students into a major community institution with a wide range of music programs, including:

  • High quality music instruction in more than 20 instruments and voice for nearly 600 children, teens and adults of all backgrounds each year
  • Scholarships and tuition assistance for any student with financial need; TBMS proudly funds 100% of financial aid requests
  • Music outreach programs that serve more than 1,000 New York City public school students in Harlem, Roosevelt Island, Lower East Side, Upper East Side and Turtle Bay
  • The Saturday Music Project, a new, fully-funded music initiative that provides two years of free music education to motivated middle school students and their families, who have little or no access to music
  • Hear It Now! Concert Series, which provides free family programs, masterclasses and educational concerts at TBMS to all members of the community
  • Free concerts at New York City hospitals and senior centers

Our mission is rooted in the fact that music-making is a unifying activity that crosses the boundaries of culture, language and financial status. TBMS students range in age from 18 months to 90 years. No student is ever turned away for lack of financial resources. TBMS students come from throughout the five boroughs of New York City, as well as from New Jersey, New York State, and Connecticut.
